She graduated as a Dentist in her hometown. After graduating, Maria wanted to achieve one of her lifelong ambitions, which was to travel and experience life and culture in a different country. Since her arrival in 2007, she has been working in Primary Care dentistry, allowing her to utilise her dental skills to deliver high standards of dental treatment to a variety of different patients.
During the past few years, Maria hasn’t stopped learning and improving her knowledge in the field of dentistry and her main interests are Orthodontics as well as Oral Surgery. She achieved a Postgraduate Certificate in Orthodontics and worked voluntarily with Mercy Ships (a non-profit organisation that does charitable work) in Sierra Leone. Maria says she found this experience ‘very challenging yet rewarding at the same time.'
Maria likes to travel along with meeting different people and sharing their culture. She loves learning new languages and is proud to say that she can talk perfect Spanish, and English (with an accent!) as well as intermediate French. Outside of dentistry, Maria enjoys physical activities such as Yoga, trekking in the countryside, along with cycling. She also has a passion for cooking.
Maria considers herself to be very patient, considerate, empathetic and a good communicator, qualities, which she believes are vital for patient care.
After qualifying as a hygienist in Edinburgh in 1994, Karen moved to Nottingham where she worked in a variety of dental practices before taking a five-year career break after the birth of her son.
Since returning to dentistry, Karen had attended various courses to enhance her in-surgery skills. She is a dedicated hygienist keen to equip her patients with the knowledge she has gained, to enhance their smiles and, ultimately, their general health and wellbeing.
Karen has a special interest in implant surgery and maintenance. As maintenance is pivotal to the success of dental implants, Karen has developed and implemented a maintenance programme within the practice to ensure all our implant patients are continually cared for to our high standards. This dedication to the maintenance of dental implants has meant Karen was elected by her peers in 2014-2016 onto the Committee for The Association of Dental Implantology (ADI), a UK based organisation supporting Dentists and patients. She organised a highly successful National Congress for the Dental Team including dental nurses, receptionists, and managers as well as her Hygienist and Therapist peers. During her role on the ADI committee Karen travelled the country lecturing to Dentists on the treatment and maintenance of dental implants.
Karen has also lectured at the Congress for the International Team for Implantology to promote and emphasise the need for continuing maintenance of dental implants among her peers. As a Key Opinion Leader for Dentsply Sirona, Karen has run courses and delivered lectures to Dentists, Hygienists and Therapists across the country. Karen recently won a Research prize and published a paper on the ‘Importance of patients maintaining good oral hygiene to help support and maintain dental implants.
Karen is a supporter of the worldwide dental charity Dentaid. In 2008, Karen travelled to Uganda with Christian Relief Uganda in conjunction with Dentaid where she worked in remote villages providing emergency dental care with a team of dental professionals. Part of the programme was to promote Dental Health Education linked to basic Health Education in rural schools. She and the team also helped to formulate a now published book on Infant Oral Mutilation (IOM), a subject at the heart of Dentaid's Educational Development Programme in many African communities.
Karen is a member of the professional bodies, The British Society of Dental Hygiene & Therapy and The British Society of Periodontology and The Association of Dental Implantology and The International Team for Implantology.
