At The Campbell Clinic in Nottingham, we offer thoughtful, skilled orthodontic treatment for children and teenagers, helping them develop a healthy, well-aligned smile and supporting their long-term dental health with careful, personalised care.
Most children begin orthodontic treatment between the ages of 8 and 14, once their permanent teeth have developed. This is often when crowding, spacing, bite problems such as an overbite or underbite, and jaw development concerns become more noticeable.
Starting treatment at the right time can:
We typically recommend an orthodontic assessment from around the age of 7 to 9, even if no obvious problems are present. Early assessment allows us to monitor development carefully and identify whether treatment may be helpful now or later as your child grows.
While NHS braces may be available in more severe cases based on the IOTN scoring system, not all children qualify. Waiting lists can also delay treatment, which is why many families choose private orthodontic care for faster access, more treatment options and a more tailored experience.
We offer a range of private orthodontic treatments for children and teenagers, including:

Back to Orthodontics1. Initial Consultation
We’ll assess your child’s teeth, jaw growth, and bite, and talk through whether treatment is needed now or best delayed. We always recommend a no-pressure, honest discussion.
2. Digital Planning
Using a 3D scan of their teeth, we’ll create a personalised treatment plan. No messy impressions, just comfortable, advanced diagnostics.
3. Treatment Options
If treatment is needed, we’ll walk you through the most appropriate brace types based on your child’s goals, lifestyle, and oral health.
4. Regular Check-Ins
We typically see children every 6–8 weeks during treatment to make adjustments and monitor progress. Most courses of treatment last 12–24 months, depending on complexity.
5. Support and Retention
Once treatment is complete, we’ll provide retainers and guidance to protect their new smile for years to come.
We usually start assessing orthodontic needs around age 8. In many cases, we may not recommend treatment right away, but early checks can help us guide proper development.
NHS braces are only available for children with moderate to severe orthodontic needs, assessed using the IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need). If your child doesn’t qualify, or you want faster access, private treatment may be a better fit.
Most fixed brace treatments last 12–24 months. Some minor cases may be shorter. We’ll give you a clear timeline during the consultation.
Fitting braces doesn’t hurt, but your child may feel some aching or mild discomfort in the first few days after fitting or adjustments. This usually settles quickly.
Costs depend on the type of treatment and length. We’ll always provide a full quote after the consultation and offer flexible payment plans to help spread the cost.
Orthodontics is about more than straight teeth – it’s about growing up with confidence, health, and the right support. We’re here to help you explore the best path forward.
