Colin Campbell - Dentist at The Campbell Clinic in Nottingham

Here at The Campbell Clinic there are many clinicians and staff members you can meet, here you can get to know a little bit about Colin Campbell, the owner and clinical director of The Campbell Clinic.

Hi, my name is Colin Campbell and I’m a specialist in oral surgery and I'm one of the surgical practitioners at The Campbell Clinic and I’m also the founder/owner and clinical director of The Campbell Clinic.

Why did you first get into dentistry?

I chose a career in dentistry because I wasn’t very good at maths, I failed my maths at school and I was a latecomer to the chance of going to university and so, when I got my results which were called ‘Highers’ at the time in Scotland, my teachers’ kind of ran around panicking a little bit because I’d done better than expected and told me to find a course at university. I met my friend Fergus in the library, who was always going to be a dentist and I said, “I’ve got these exam results and I need to find a course at university”, to which he replied, ‘why don’t we both go and do dentistry?” and that is actually what happened so, here I am!

Where did you study?

I studied in Glasgow at the University of Glasgow from 1989 to 1994, where I obtained my dental degree and then Bachelor of Dental Surgery with commendation, following this I went on to do some further studying and qualifications and in 1997 I achieved a fellowship of dental surgeons of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, which is the highest surgical qualification that a dentist can achieve.

What are your main interests in Dentistry?

My main interests in dentistry, well I’m a surgeon primarily and so I don't carry out any sort of normal dentistry anymore really and most of my work is surgically based so, that generally centres around placement of dental implants and procedures that facilitate placing dental implants. I also carry out surgical extractions and I’ve done quite a lot of surgical extractions, probably around ten thousand and surgery inside the mouth and so, that's the majority of my work in dentistry.

What do you enjoy about being a dentist?

I enjoy everything about being a dentist, but I mostly enjoy the people that I meet in dentistry, that's the greatest privilege of our work and it's also a job that allows you to genuinely help people and I get a huge buzz out of doing that, when you actually help someone as not every job allows you to do that. I also like the peace of working with my hands because when you're actually doing something that takes a long time, it's really satisfying and a lot of people in their jobs just kind of like make paper or move emails around and that part of my job is really satisfying and I’m very lucky.

What are your hobbies outside of dentistry?

Outside of dentistry I love to spend time with my family, I have three children and a wife. I enjoy riding my bike, I was a triathlete so, I ride my bike as much as I’m allowed and can. I love to listen to music, listen to books, read books and I love to go to the cinema and explore new films and to be able to share all of that with other people.
